India suffered a 1-6 defeat to two-time World champion Uruguay at the Salt Lake Stadium on Tuesday, with Anirudh Thapa’s goal providing the lone bright spot for the home side.

Uruguay took the lead before Thapa brought India back into the contest, finding the equaliser and giving the home crowd something to celebrate.

However, the match was halted shortly after the Indian midfielder’s goal because of inclement weather, with the players taken off the pitch for a brief period.

The interruption did little to disrupt Uruguay’s rhythm. Soon after play resumed, the visitor struck again to restore its advantage and began to take control of the contest.

The Blue Tigers had a few encouraging spells in the second half and attempted to push forward whenever possession allowed.

Substitute Mohammed Sanan provided one of India’s better moments after coming on, taking a shot from edge of the box that forced a save from the Uruguay goalkeeper.

It was, however not enough for the hosts as Uruguay remained firmly in control and eventually completed a 6-1 victory.
