SASSA Grant-in-Aid: SA’s ‘forgotten’ endowment worth THIS much

Translate

SASSA Grant-in-Aid is an endowment for beneficiaries whose needs go beyond what their main stipend covers. And yet many of the nearly 28-million social grant recipients admit they don’t know what the additional endowment even is. This is why it’s often referred to as South Africa’s ‘forgotten’ grant.

SASSA GRANT-IN-AID ELIGIBILITY

As such, it is an extra monthly payment of R580. It is for South African Social Security Agency recipients who already benefit from a SASSA grant. However, they must be able to prove they require full-time care from another person because of a physical or mental disability.

The figure, effective 1 April 2026, added to any ‘core’ SASSA grant, turns disbursements on payday into this:

  • SASSA Older Person Grant (60 to 74) + Grant-in-Aid: R2 980
  • Older Person Grant (75 and over) + SASSA Grant-in-Aid: R3 000
  • SASSA Disability Grant + Grant-in-Aid: R2 980
  • War Veterans Grant + SASSA Grant-in-Aid: R3 000

Unfortunately, October 2026 top-ups did not go ahead, so these amounts are unchanged since April.

WHO CAN GET SASSA GRANT-IN-AID?

The scenarios of when SASSA Grant-in-Aid is applicable are described by the agency as follows:

  • An Old-Age Grant recipient with dementia or who needs constant supervision.
  • Any disabled adult, aged 18 to 59, on the Disability Grant who needs help with basic daily tasks.
  • War Veterans who need full-time care from injuries.

Note that anyone already cared for in a state institution does not qualify.

WHO DOES NOT QUALIFY FOR IT?

As we can see, SASSA Grant-in-Aid depends on your specific medical needs. But the eligibility appears pretty broad, so, how does the agency police it? Well, it medically checks each case and you require an official medical and functional assessment report.

According to its website, this must be done by a registered medical practitioner, confirming that the recipient needs regular personal care. If you think you or someone you know qualifies for SASSA Grant-in-Aid, this is how you apply:

  • Visit your nearest SASSA office (not easy in person, we know) or call 0800 601 011.
  • Bring along your valid ID document, proof you already receive a grant, bank details and the medical report confirming you need full-time care (not less than three months old).
  • You can get a friend of family member to assist if you produce a letter from your doctor and have all of the above copied and certified.

A reminder that SASSA Grant-in-Aid is paid to the person who needs care on the same day as their main money. And it is meant to help fund any in-home care.

But what do you think? Do you have any experiences with the ‘forgotten’ grant and how well it is policed by the agency? Please share your thoughts in the comments section below …
