It’s not great news for October 2026 SASSA Children’s Grants being disbursed in three weeks’ time.

With the grant set aside for more than 13 million recipients with children, it is, in fact, the largest state-run social-protection programme. And that’s why it is coming under fire from likely and some unlikely sources …

OCTOBER 2026 SASSA CHILDREN’S GRANTS

Firstly, there’s the payment date set aside for October 2026 SASSA Children’s Grants: Tuesday, 6 October.

That’s a longer-than-usual gap since September’s disbursements, 32 days to be exact. Of course, calendars ebb and flow, but the average gap is 28 days. And Older Persons get their grants paid sooner.

However, the next issue is likely to leave beneficiaries in a real state.

While the decision to initiate October grant top-ups is still to be decided, we are highly certain that R580 Child Support will not increase.

The South African Social Security Agency has not done so for consecutive years, and is even less likely to do so this year …

LOWER THE NUMBER BENEFICIARIES BY 2028

According to The South African, the agency must lower the number of Child Support beneficiaries by 696 000 by 2028.

According to the National Treasury, which decides SASSA’s annual budget, it must lower the number of beneficiaries like so in the coming years:

• This year (2026), 248 000 must be wiped off the books
• In 2027, they want a further 232 000 gone
• And in 2028, another 216 000 beneficiaries are scheduled to be removed
• Leaving a total of 696 000 recipients on the chopping block

That spells three kinds of bad news for October 2026 SASSA Children’s Grants.   

HOW MUCH WILL OCTOBER 2026 SASSA CHILDREN’S GRANTS BE?

As mentioned, at the time of publishing, the amounts for most October 2026 SASSA Children’s Grants themselves are unchanged:

• Child Support pays R580, up by R20 from R560 back in April 2026
• Foster Child pays R1 290, up by R40 from R1 250 back in April 2026
• Care Dependency pays R2 400 up by R80 from R2 320 back in April 2026.

There have been scattered reports that SASSA Foster Care is scheduled for a R10 bump from R1 290 to R1 300. However, this is yet to be made official by the agency.

INCOME ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR SASSA CHILDREN’S GRANTS

Likewise, applicants should always keep up to date with any revised income eligibility requirements.

Previously, a single caregiver on Child Support could earn R5 100 per month and still qualify. Now that limit has increased to R5 800.

And for married couples looking after a minor, the figure increases from R10 200 to R11 600 per month. This is good news for those earning extra on the side.

Tallied up annually, that equates to R69 600 (single person) and R139 200 (couple).

Note that there is no asset portion to the Child Support means test, like there is with SASSA Old-Age Grants.

Also, the agency now claims maximum wait times of just 90 minutes at SASSA offices. This is due to self-service kiosks with Wi-Fi where beneficiaries can complete eLife and biometric verification.

SAME-DAY SERVICE FOR OCTOBER 2026 CHILDREN’S GRANTS

Better still, the agency says most October 2026 SASSA Children’s Grants can be approved on the same day. Previously, the waiting period used to be three months.

However, if you have all your documents in order on your first visit, you could walk away with an approved grant right there and then.

Here’s what you must remember to bring to your application appointment:

• Valid identity documents (IDs) – preferably Smart ID cards – and birth certificates of you, your child and spouse (if married).
• Proof of marital status (marriage, birth or death certificate of your spouse).
• Proof of income (you and your spouse).
• Certified three-month bank statement, not older than three months.
• Proof of address (a utility statement with your name on it that’s not more the three-months old).

If you don’t produce all the correct documents and copies, you may be sent away and asked to return. And if you are denied a SASSA grant, you have three months to lodge an appeal with the DSD HERE.
