Zimbabwean striker one goal away from making PSL history

Zimbabwean striker Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya is one goal away from making South African Premier Soccer League (PSL) history after extending his remarkable scoring run for AmaZulu.

The 23-year-old found the net again as AmaZulu beat Polokwane City 1-0 on Saturday, taking his tally to seven consecutive Betway Premiership matches with a goal.

Ngwenya’s latest strike means he has scored in every league match AmaZulu have played this season.

Ngwenya joins exclusive PSL club

According to OptaJabu, Ngwenya has now matched a scoring record achieved by only two other players during the PSL era.

Grant Young scored in seven consecutive league matches for Hellenic in 1999, while former Zimbabwe international Esau Kanyenda achieved the same feat with Jomo Cosmos in 2002.

More than two decades later, Ngwenya has joined the pair.

But the AmaZulu forward now has an opportunity to go one step further.

If Ngwenya scores in his next league appearance, he will extend his scoring streak to eight consecutive matches, giving him the longest such run in PSL league history.

Zimbabwean striker has scored eight goals

Ngwenya’s consistency has been one of the standout features of AmaZulu’s start to the season.

Although he has scored in seven consecutive league games, his total is even higher than seven because he has already found the net twice in one match.

He now has eight Betway Premiership goals this season.

That means Ngwenya has scored in every league appearance for Usuthu, establishing himself as one of the division’s most consistent attacking players.

His latest goal against Polokwane City was particularly important, as it proved to be the difference between the two sides and secured another three points for AmaZulu.

Record could come against next opponent

Attention will now turn to Ngwenya’s next league appearance.

The Zimbabwean, who is currently on national duty in Morocco, knows that another goal could see him move beyond Young and Kanyenda and claim the record outright.

It would be a remarkable achievement for a player who has emerged as one of AmaZulu’s leading attacking threats this season.

For now, Ngwenya has matched a record that has stood since 2002.

One more goal could see his name stand alone in the PSL record books.
