Manila suspends in-person classes Sept. 21 over Martial Law anniv rally

MANILA, Philippines — Face-to-face classes in public and private schools at all levels in Manila are suspended on Monday, Sept. 21, due to security concerns over rallies and other activities marking the 54th anniversary of the declaration of Martial Law.

Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso announced the suspension on Sunday, noting that it was based on the recommendation of the Manila Police District (MPD).

“The suspension is issued to ensure the safety and welfare of students by minimizing their exposure to potential risks associated with heavy traffic, road closures, and large public gatherings,” Domagoso said, as quoted by the Manila Public Information Office.

Classes in public and private schools are directed to shift to alternative learning modes.

Citing the MPD, Domagoso said various rallies and other activities would be held across the city.

Progressive group Bagong Alyansang Makabayan earlier said it would stage a program at Liwasang Bonifacio and Mendiola in Manila.

The Philippine National Police said it would deploy more than 15,700 police officers during the rallies. /mcm
