'Drunk Australian Player' Hung Yuzvendra Chahal From 15th Floor Balcony Of A Hotel: "Not Andrew Symonds, James Franklin"

Veteran India spinner Yuzvendra Chahal has finally opened up in detail over being hung from a hotel balcony during IPL 2013. Chahal, who has played 188 IPL matches and taken 233 wickets, is the tournament's leading wicket-taker. While he enjoyed his most successful years with Royal Challengers Bengaluru, where he spent eight seasons, the leg-spinner began his IPL journey with Mumbai Indians in 2013. Recently, he opened up about a frightening incident from his early days in the franchise.

Back in 2022, Chahal revealed that he was hung upside down from the 15th-floor balcony of a hotel by an intoxicated cricketer. Several reports had suggested that late Australian all-rounder Andrew Symonds was responsible for the incident.

Speaking on former India opener Aakash Chopra's podcast, Chahal clarified that the incident did occur, but neither Symonds nor James Franklin was involved. Instead, he revealed that another Australian cricketer was responsible.

"There was a party in Bengaluru hosted by RCB. I was playing for MI at the time. I also went there and saw a guy who was heavily drunk. He was well-built and very strong. He was from Australia, but he was neither Symonds nor Franklin, rather some other guy. He called me over and then lifted me into the air. At first, I thought he was joking, but then he hung me over the balcony, and I was just holding on to his neck," said Chahal.

"I was terrified. He was heavily drunk, and everyone in the room was stunned. Suddenly, everyone intervened and pulled me back up. That guy was laughing, but for me, it felt like a second birth. I think it was on the 15th or 16th floor of the hotel," he added.

Chahal also admitted that he was young and naive at the time and did not know how to lodge a formal complaint. He eventually chose to move on from the episode and focus on his cricket career.

Meanwhile, the 36-year-old has been out of favour with the Indian selectors for some time. His last appearance for Team India came in a T20I against the West Indies in 2023. In the IPL, he currently represents Punjab Kings. During the 2026 season, Chahal featured in 14 matches and claimed 12 wickets. The legspinner Yuzvendra Chahal has retired from first-class cricket, but he still hopes for a comeback in ODIs and T20Is.
