Bali's Kura-Kura KEK develops plant nursery for sustainable tourism

Denpasar, Bali (ANTARA) - The Kura Kura Special Economic Zone (SEZ/KEK) in Denpasar, Bali, has developed a plant nursery to support green and sustainable tourism on the island.

“We are caring for 83 plant species,” said Zefri Alfaruqy, head of the Kura Kura SEZ Communications Department, in Denpasar on Tuesday.

He explained that the collection comprises 57 shrub species and 26 tree species, with nearly 26,000 plants in total.

Of these, 14,700 are in the seedling stage, 10,750 are in the transplanting stage, and 521 are ready for planting.

Shrubs make up the largest share of the collection because they play an important role in supporting vegetation structure, providing ground cover, and enhancing the area's appearance.

The shrub collection includes oleander (Nerium oleander), sea lettuce (Scaevola taccada), and mousetail plant (Phyllanthus myrtifolius), locally known as cendrawasih.

Meanwhile, the tree collection has been prepared to establish a canopy and support the long-term development of vegetation across the area.

Alfaruqy said the nursery was also developing local plant species typical of tropical and coastal environments, including crown flower (Calotropis gigantea), frangipani (Plumeria pudica), cape jasmine (Gardenia jasminoides), and ti plant (Cordyline fruticosa), locally known as andong.

The plants are maintained by workers, most of whom live near the SEZ in Serangan Village, Denpasar.

An organic waste management facility has also been established near the nursery. Fallen leaves are collected and processed into compost, which is then used to fertilize the plants.

Alfaruqy said the 240,379-square-meter area currently contained 737,441 trees and shrubs, a substantial increase from 177,000 plants in 2023.

“Going forward, these initiatives and facilities will continue to be developed in line with the area's growth and landscaping needs,” a representative of Bali Turtle Island Development (BTID), the manager of the Kura Kura Bali SEZ, said.
