Vance reacts to a protester by calling the Mexican flag ‘symbol of the far left’

A man waving a Mexican flag interrupted JD Vance during his speech at the Republican Party’s midterm convention in Dallas on Thursday, prompting the U.S. vice president to label the protester an “idiot” and describe the tricolor as “a symbol of the far left.”

The disruption occurred while the vice president was talking about the constitutional right of birthright citizenship, which President Donald Trump has sought to restrict, and caused Vance to pause momentarily.

As the protester — who had also been waving a Palestinian flag — was being escorted out of the American Airlines Center, he tossed the Mexican banner onto the stage.

The incident wasn’t broadcast on the live television feed, but Vance described the events from the podium.

“What the people at home missed is that we just had a protester interrupting us and waving the Mexican flag,” Vance said. “Well, my friend, if you love Mexico so much, get your ass over there. I’ll buy you the plane ticket.”

The crowd cheered and chuckled, chanting “USA! USA!” while Vance sought to return to the second half of his keynote address.

“I had a whole speech written,” he said, “ but I think I have to change it, because we just discovered a symbol of the far left — an idiot waving … a Mexican flag.”

On several occasions, Vance returned to the incident as a broader political point, later telling the crowd that while the demonstrator waved a foreign flag, Republicans would continue “to wave the American flag and fight for the American dream.”

He praised Trump’s immigration policy, outlining the administration’s efforts to reduce illegal immigration, while calling it “the first government in the last 80 years to reverse the border invasion.” He also highlighted immigration while arguing that Republicans were prioritizing jobs for U.S. citizens.

After the incident, NBC correspondent Garrett Haake posted a comment on social media, wondering if the episode had been staged.

“Vance’s quippy response to a protestor who interrupted and threw a Mexican flag on stage was SO quick it kind of makes you wonder if that wasn’t entirely a surprise,” Haake wrote.

Prior to the convention, Vance has primarily spoken about Mexico in the context of U.S. border security, illegal immigration and drug cartels. 

In a visit to the Mexico-U.S. border in March 2025, he described U.S. actions and tariffs as a good-faith effort to help prevent Mexico from turning into a “narco state,” while also consistently supporting the designation of Mexican drug cartels as foreign terrorist organizations.
