CID cautions public against criminals using QNET to lure victims into trafficking

Translate

The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) has cautioned the public against individuals exploiting the name of direct-selling company QNET to lure unsuspecting people into human trafficking and other forms of exploitation.

Superintendent William Ayariga, Director of the CID’s Anti-Human Trafficking Unit, said organised criminal groups were using promises of lucrative business opportunities and financial gains to deceive victims, primarily to extort money from them.

Speaking on Citi FM on Thursday, October 22, he stressed the need to distinguish between QNET’s business operations and individuals allegedly using its name to facilitate criminal activities.

“Let me emphasise that QNET itself is not an illegitimate business, but people are using the name of the company to lure unsuspecting victims into trafficking and other forms of exploitation,” he said.

Mr Ayariga explained that the perpetrators were motivated by financial gain and could exploit victims financially before coercing them into online activities linked to fraudulent schemes.

He urged the public to exercise caution when approached with offers presented in QNET’s name, particularly where individuals demand payments in exchange for promised business opportunities.

The CID official advised prospective participants to verify the identities of those making such offers and the arrangements involved before making payments or committing to any agreement. He also encouraged anyone seeking clarification to contact the Anti-Human Trafficking Unit.

QNET is a direct-selling company that offers lifestyle and wellness products. The company says it maintains memberships in direct-selling and industry associations in several countries, including the Hong Kong Health Food Association and Singapore’s Health Supplements Industry Association.
