Pedal mix-up sends driver crashing into two cars, restaurant

JOHOR BARU: A 69-year-old man crashed into two cars before his Toyota Camry went through a restaurant at Jalan Sagu 3, Taman Daya, here yesterday.

The incident occurred at 2.20pm after the elderly was leaving the restaurant for his home in Jalan Daya.

Johor Baru (South) police chief Assistant Commissioner Azrul Hisham Mohd Shaffei said the driver had mistakenly pressed the accelerator while reversing, causing the vehicle to hit a car parked behind it.

"Following the collision, the driver panicked and pressed the accelerator again, causing his car to reverse into another car parked in front of the restaurant before crashing into the premises," he said in a statement.

No injuries were reported. The two other car and the restaurant sustained damages.

Azrul said initial investigations found that the crash was caused by the driver's negligence in pressing the accelerator, resulting in him losing control of the vehicle.

The case is being investigated under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for careless and inconsiderate driving.

Azrul advised motorists to ensure they were fit and alert before driving and to maintain proper control of their vehicles at all times.
