G4: UNSC losing its credibility, unable to maintain global peace

NEW DELHI: Meeting on the margins of United Nations General Assembly, G4 countries called for a reform of the UNSC at the earliest, saying in a joint statement that the council is currently unable to effectively discharge its core responsibility of maintaining international peace and security.The G4 group of countries (India, Japan, Brazil, and Germany) supports urgent reforms of the security council through the expansion in both permanent and non-permanent categories of membership of UNSC."Discussed the imperative of reformed multilateralism and a more representative, responsive and effective UN Security Council that reflects today's global realities. Will continue to work together to advance this shared objective," said Union external affairs minister S Jaishankar on X.The joint statement said that the representativeness, legitimacy, credibility and efficacy of UNSC are in question."They assessed that a key underlying reason is an anachronistic eight-decade-old architecture, which is not reflective of contemporary geopolitical realities and an impediment to appropriately dealing with contemporary and future challenges that humanity faces with respect to peace and security."

Against this backdrop, G4 Ministers emphasised that it is crucial to implement UNSC reform at the earliest so that the council is fit-for-purpose, truly reflecting contemporary geopolitical realities."They underscored that expansion of United Nations Security Council in both permanent and non-permanent categories of membership is central to such reform and that this position is supported by a majority of member states," the statement added.
