The end of Quebec’s left-wing consensus

The Parti Québécois may have won a minority government, but the biggest winners in last week’s election might just have been the Quebec Conservative Party. Under the leadership of Éric Duhaime, the Quebec Conservatives came from nowhere to capture 19 seats in the Quebec National Assembly after a campaign where the Conservatives drove much of the policy agenda. In this interview, Rob Breakenridge is joined by former Quebec Conservative Leader Adrien Pouliot for a closer look at how the party finally made its big breakthrough and burst Quebec’s long-standing consensus around big government and left-of-centre policies. Pouliot says that Quebec Conservatives ran and succeeded with a campaign focused on ideas, including tax cuts, cutting government waste, health care reform, and better control of immigration — an approach that offers lessons for conservative parties across Canada.
