NRL grand final celebrations LIVE updates: Roosters celebrate NRL and NRLW premierships
Kangaroos coach Kevin Walters has named premiership winning trio Lindsay Collins, James Tedesco and Sam Walker in his 23-man squad for the World Cup that starts next week.
Fresh off their 19-18 win over the Knights on Sunday night, the Roosters trio will swap celebrations for more hard work, this time in the green and gold.
Walker is one of four playmakers named in Walters’ squad. The Queensland Origin star joins Cam Munster, Tom Dearden and Mitchell Moses’ as the host nation’s halves options.
Australia squad: Bradman Best, Jack Bostock, Blake Brailey, Pat Carrigan, Lindsay Collins, Reuben Cotter, Tom Dearden, Tino Fa’asuamaleaui, David Fifita, Harry Grant, Keaon Koloamatangi, Liam Martin, Latrell Mitchell, Mitchell Moses, Cam Munster, Cam Murray, Jacob Preston, Kotoni Staggs, James Tedesco, Tom Trbojevic, Sam Walker, Reece Walsh, Isaah Yeo
Roosters NRLW coach John Strange, who has gone the entire night without sleep, burst into a dance on stage at the club’s fan event this morning.
Strange, wearing sunglasses and hat backwards, sprung into the dance, which included an impromptu breakdance, as his team was being celebrated for its triumphant performance on grand final day. See the pictures below.
Rooster players have been swarmed by supporters at the Sydney Cricket Ground, given a hero’s welcome by those gathered to celebrate with the NRL and NRLW premiers.
It’s been a ripper year for Jessica Sergis, the Roosters centre who secured the NRLW team their maiden premiership win in 2021, again in 2024 and for a third time last night.
Though Sergis was denied a try in Sunday’s grand final, she’s finished the season with 17 overall. That’s two more than Broncos fullback Tamika Upton, who won the Dally M medal this year.
In July, Sergis marked the milestone of 50 NRLW appearances, and let’s not forget her State of Origin title-winning campaign with the NSW Blues this year, with a sensational try sealing Game 1 for the team.
But it’s her April engagement to Roosters men’s centre Tommy Talau that made victory even sweeter for Sergis.
“One team celebrating,” the Rooster’s women’s team wrote on Instagram, alongside a snap of Sergis with Talau on the field. (Talau was dropped from the reserves list before the men’s game kicked off).
Sergis is ending the year with two rings – one for her third premiership, and one from her fiancé.
Roosters faithful have congregated at the Sydney Cricket Ground, to bask in the celebrations of their NRL and NRLW premierships. See the pictures below.
A big turnout at the Sydney Cricket Ground as Roosters men’s and women’s teams roll in. Some looking a little worse for wear.
Lindsay Collins still has his jersey on and a beer in hand. Sam Walker on the hard solos. Fair effort fronting up.
Roosters hooker Reece Robson led the defensive line speed last night, and it might have been a good luck charm on his feet that helped light his way.
Robson’s partner Ellie Carmichael revealed on her Instagram Story that, alongside #EastsToWin, Robson’s shoes had her name and the names of their two children – two-year-old daughter Hazel and four-month-old son Rowe – embossed on the heels.
“So proud of you,” Carmichael wrote alongside a family snap, shared ahead of the game.
It’s the morning after both the men and women’s Sydney Roosters teams took out the premierships, and the NRLW side’s head coach has not gone to bed.
“Haven’t gone to sleep yet,” said John Strange when Today reporter Taylor Haines approached him outside Easts Bondi Junction, the leagues club where the teams and their loved ones have been partying since the sirens sounded yesterday.
“Really happy, extremely proud, they’re an amazing bunch of girls, and players, so, yeah, really happy with them.”
Strange then broke out into dance with reporter Haines and some of his players who were headed to the fan event kicking off at 9am at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
He has much to dance about – not only did his team beat the Broncos by a whopping 24 points, but his daughter, Jasmin Strange, started in the second row for the Roosters.
His son, Ethan Strange, plays for the Canberra Raiders.
Mark Nawaqanitawase, Suia Wong and Tommy Talau have popped up at a Bondi cafe, enjoying a coffee after what was a long night of celebrations.
Wong hasn’t changed out of his jersey from the Roosters’ thrilling 19-18 victory over the Knights, as the players showed off their premiership rings to the patrons and workers at the cafe.
The trio is due at the Sydney Cricket Ground in the next hour, where the Roosters faithful will congregate to celebrate their premierships in both the NRL and NRLW competitions.
The playing groups celebrated long into the night at Easts Bondi Junction, arriving at the leagues club in the early hours of this morning following their respective triumphs at Accor Stadium.
