Makinde makes history with third Nigeria Cup title

Makinde secured his third victory with an impressive net score of 65.

The 29th edition of the annual Nigeria Cup golf tournament ended at the golf section of Ikoyi Club 1938 over the weekend, with Mike Makinde making history as the first golfer to win the title three times.

The seven-handicap golfer secured his third victory with an impressive net score of 65, finishing four shots ahead of his closest rival, Anscy Okoebor, while Abiola Johnson finished third.

Makinde first won the tournament in 2022 before successfully defending his title in 2023. He missed out on the trophy to Tayo Babalakin in 2024 and Paul Tijani in 2025 but returned to winning ways this year to become the competition’s first three-time champion.

Speaking after his victory, Makinde thanked members of the organising committee for their efforts, describing his triumph as a product of hard work.

“I consider winning again as an important part of my golfing career. I’m excited and happy with the outcome of this tournament,” he said, expressing optimism about securing more victories in the years ahead.

In the men’s gross category, Akeem Lawal emerged victorious with a score of 75, while Calli Udalor finished second with 76. Peter Eben-Spiff completed the top three.

Other winners at the keenly contested tournament included Adeyosola Ayodele, who claimed the ladies’ net category with a score of 71, while Evelyn Oyome won the ladies’ gross category.

Chairman of the 2026 Nigeria Cup Organising Committee, Mohammed Oybo, expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the week-long competition, thanking the sponsors, committee members and golfers for their contributions and commitment to sustaining the tournament.

Oybo said the committee was guided by its desire to elevate the competition and deliver an unforgettable week of golf for participants.

The Nigeria Cup is an annual tournament organised to celebrate Nigeria’s Independence anniversary.
