Indonesia boosts cosmetics IKM exports, eyes global markets

Papua New Guinea is one of the promising neighboring export markets to continue developing..
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Industry Ministry said it is strengthening exports by small and medium cosmetics industries (IKM) by improving their competitiveness, product quality, and expanded access to global markets.
Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita said the success of cosmetics IKM in penetrating international markets demonstrates the growing competitiveness of Indonesian cosmetics in terms of quality, safety, and innovation.
"Cosmetics products made in Indonesia are increasingly trusted in the global market because of their good quality, safety, and proven benefits for consumers," the minister said in a statement here on Wednesday.
According to him, the potential of the cosmetics industry needs to be leveraged to strengthen production capacity, boost innovation, and build local brands capable of competing in international markets.
Cosmetics industry exports reached US$473.8 million in 2025, up 13.7 percent from US$416.8 million in 2024.
"This growth in export performance is proof that domestic cosmetics industry players continue to develop and improve their quality as well as their market reach. This potential must be leveraged by the domestic industry, including small and medium enterprises," he said.
According to data from the Food and Drug Monitoring Agency (BPOM) as of July 2026, Indonesia had 1,655 cosmetics industry players, with more than 87 percent classified as IKM. As of August 2026, more than 370,000 cosmetics products had been registered with BPOM.
Director General of Small, Medium, and Miscellaneous Industries (IKMA) Reni Yanita said the efforts were reflected in the success of PT Follow Me Indonesia in entering the Papua New Guinea market by exporting perfume and hair gel products.
"One example of successful local industry development in the cosmetics sector can be seen in the growth of a local perfume brand whose products have managed to reach export markets," Yanita said.
She said Papua New Guinea is a promising export market due to its geographic proximity and growing opportunities for Indonesian products to penetrate the region.
"Papua New Guinea is one of the promising neighboring export markets to continue developing, in line with the growing opportunities for Indonesian products to penetrate that region," Yanita added.
