For the most part, bakkies are still seen as workhorses, but they’ve generally become lifestyle vehicles. And in a place like South Africa, where bakkies are a way of life, looks have become an important factor.

Bakkies need to be practical and decent looking, too. JAC Motors South Africa has expanded its popular T-Series line-up with two new T9 2.0L CTi Black Edition 4x4 models – in Hunter and Super Lux specifications. The Hunter produces 144kW and 487Nm, while the Super Lux delivers 125kW and 444Nm.

The automaker says these new additions strengthen JAC Motors’ premium bakkie range and form part of its Decade campaign, celebrating almost 10 years of operations in South Africa.

The Black Edition adds a more distinctive, rugged look that sets it apart from the rest of the line-up. It has a black radiator grille, matt-black 18-inch alloy wheels, roof rails, exterior mirrors, door handles, and exterior trim – all finished in black. Inside, the premium black leather-enhanced interior combines luxury, durability and easy cleaning.

The T9 Hunter Black Edition further distinguishes itself with unique Hunter-branded decals on the sides and tailgate. Standard features include branded nudge and style bars, a tonneau cover and a tow bar. Inside, there are also branded headrests and heavy-duty floor carpets.

The T9’s 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine features direct injection, common-rail technology, an intercooler and an Electrical Variable Geometry Turbocharger (EVGT). Paired with a seamless ZF eight-speed automatic transmission, it offers Sport, Normal, Eco and Snow driving modes. The efficient drivetrain delivers a combined-cycle fuel consumption of 7.8 L/100km.

A centre-console dial lets you engage 4WD at speeds up to 80km/h. It also has low-range functionality and a rear electronic differential lock, providing added traction and control on challenging terrain. With a braked towing capacity of 3 500kg, it is ideal for families towing heavy camping equipment on adventurous getaways.

JAC Motors has also confirmed that its new T9 PHEV will launch locally in the fourth quarter of 2026, following its successful global launch.

The T9 line-up is available in eight colours: Star Grey, Grey, Silver, White, Black, Red, Yellow and Blue.

T9 owners can personalise their vehicles with a range of JAC Motors accessories, tailored to meet both practical work requirements and adventurous lifestyle preferences.

Combining a 2.0L turbo-petrol engine with electric motors on the front and rear axles, it delivers a combined 360kW and 674Nm. A 31.2 kWh battery provides an electric driving range of up to 100 km. The T9 PHEV supports onboard charging and can charge from 15% to 80% at a DC fast charger in just 30 minutes.

JAC Motors South Africa has a network of more than 70 dealers across Southern Africa, including Namibia, Botswana, Zambia, Lesotho, Eswatini, Malawi, Zimbabwe and Mozambique (independent). This extensive footprint ensures that after-sales service meets global standards, delivering a consistent, positive customer experience across the region.

T9 line-up and pricing

The T9’s price includes a five-year or 200 000km manufacturer’s warranty, a seven-year or 100 000km service plan and 24-hour roadside assistance for five years or 200 000km. The first service is scheduled at 10 000km, followed by services at 15 000km intervals.
