A teenager was arrested after a boy died in a fatal collision following a police pursuit, Avon and Somerset Police has said.

The boy who died at the scene was a passenger in a white Nissan Juke which was in a collision with a black Audi S3 in south Bristol just after 4am on Sunday morning.

Avon and Somerset Police said it happened on the A37 Wells Road at its junction with Airport Road and Wootton Park.

The force said: “It followed a short police pursuit involving an unmarked police vehicle and the white Nissan Juke.

“Sadly, one person – a teenage boy who was a passenger in the white Nissan Juke – died at the scene.”

Two other teenage children from the Nissan were taken to hospital with injuries not thought to be life-threatening, along with the man driving the Audi.

“Officers later arrested a 17-year-old boy at a residential property on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving,” police said.

“This young person was taken to hospital for assessment and discharged. He remains in police custody.

“Specialist officers have traced and informed the family of the boy who died and offered them support.”

A mandatory referral has been made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) as a death following police contact, and Avon and Somerset’s Professional Standards Unit has been informed.

The road was closed for collision investigation and vehicle recovery and reopened just after 4pm on Sunday.

A detective inspector from the force major crime investigation unit is currently leading the inquiry into the collision, pending any decision by the IOPC.
