The latest run of Battlestar Galactica may have ended in 2009, but for many fans, it never left. The series has maintained strong popularity over the past decade and a half, and like Firefly, many cast members are still actively working in the industry (often on other sci-fi projects) and attending the convention circuit as if the show just aired.

So whenever there's a revival in the cards, it feels incredibly natural. Thanks to a new release on Steam, Battlestar Galactica fans have a lot to be excited about this year, despite the fact that the show has been off the air for some time.

Battlestar Galactica Ships Side

Out now on PC, Battlestar Galactica: Scattered Hopes was released this year, and is proving to be a hit with hardcore fans of the series. Billed as a survival roguelite, you'll take part in real-time space battles, as you escape a Cylon Fleet and rejoin the Battlestar Galactica.

Here's everything you can expect from this adaptation: "In Battlestar Galactica: Scattered Hopes, take command of a fleet escaping the annihilation of the Twelve Colonies. Manage crises on board as you prepare for the next encounter with the Cylon Fleet. Times are dire, and hard choices must be made. Your only hope: rejoin the Battlestar Galactica."

With mostly positive reviews, fans have had some hangups recently, but overall, it's been doing well. Take this breakdown, for example: "It is so deep and interesting beyond what it seems. It is basically an adaptation of the FFG board game (A favorite of mine) without it being directly an adaptation of that board game....if you play both, you'll get where I'm coming from. Its deep and so well set up for a Rogue-lite, probably my favorite of the genre but that might be down to me being a BSG fangirl since way back."

Some folks even talk about how it mirrors the show, and is a good companion for a rewatch (or first watch): "Absolutely fantastic so far; nails the tone of the show, the battles are incredibly tense and fun to play, and it's incredibly well paced - you're making strategy or personnel decisions just long enough to be itching to get back into combat again, and then by the time the combat's done you're ready to take the larger view."

Battlestar Galactica Roster Of Ship

It's not just a survival game with real-time space battles: you'll need to manage the politics of your fleet, as well as healthcare, and the state of your ships. "Hard decisions" are part of the game, and sometimes there's no good choice. Cylons can also infiltrate your fleet, and you'll need to investigate them before they do too much internal damage.

The game has been favorably compared to FTL by some users, if you're on the fence: "I love all things BSG and this game is no different. The management side keeps you on your toes, and the fast-paced battles keep things exciting. Like FTL, but with a narrative storyline driving things forward."

If you're big on Battlestar Galactica, this is worth putting on your radar, even if that radar is a wishlist waiting for a sale.
