Dungeon Crawler Carl has become one of the biggest modern LitRPG series, and anticipation for Matt Dinniman's next installment is particularly high after the events of A Parade of Horribles. Carl and Princess Donut's journey has grown far beyond simply surviving another dungeon floor, with the series now building toward conflicts that have been foreshadowed almost from the beginning.

Fortunately, Dinniman has already revealed quite a bit about what comes next. The next installment is actively being written, has a working title, and will finally take the story into one of the dungeon's most important locations. More importantly, Dinniman's plans for the ending have changed a lot since the series first started out.

At one point, it looked like he'd need several more books to get to the ending, but now the conclusion to Carl and Donut's main story will be released in one final massive entry broken into two parts. Here's a look at everything we know so far about the last Dungeon Crawler Carl book.

Dungeon Crawler Carl Book 9 Title And Release Date

The next Dungeon Crawler Carl installment is currently being written under the working title The Beautiful Place. Dinniman revealed the title alongside the book's prologue in June 2026, although readers shouldn't necessarily assume that name will survive all the way to publication. Previous installments have gone through title changes during development, including Book 8, which was once referred to as Carl's Book of Boom before ultimately becoming A Parade of Horribles.

Dinniman has already given us a taste of how that book kicks off, sharing the prologue and early chapters with Patreon supporters, while audiobook narrator Jeff Hays performed Book 9 material publicly during San Diego Comic-Con 2026.

What the book does not have yet, however, is an official release date. Dinniman has suggested that the turnaround could be similar to A Parade of Horribles, which took roughly a year after Book 7 (give or take several months). Since Book 8 arrived in May 2026, that makes 2027 a reasonable possibility, but no specific date or release window has been announced by Dinniman or Penguin Random House.

Book 9 Will Be The Series Finale, Split Into Two Volumes

Perhaps the most important reveal surrounding The Beautiful Place is that Dinniman intends Book 9 to conclude the main Dungeon Crawler Carl story. Earlier comments suggested the series could run around 10 installments, but the current plan essentially combines that remaining material into one enormous final story. Rather than publishing it as conventional Books 9 and 10, Dinniman has described the finale as Book 9 split across two physical volumes, though this effectively equates to the same amount of content we'd have ended up seeing with two different books.

Notably, that distinction could become slightly confusing once the books actually reach stores, as there are currently eight numbered novels, meaning two additional physical releases would technically leave readers with 10 books on their shelves. Narratively, though, both parts are intended to comprise the ninth and final installment.

That said, several important details remain unknown. Dinniman has not confirmed whether both volumes will arrive simultaneously, how far apart they could release, or whether each will receive its own subtitle, etc. Page counts, cover artwork, preorder information, and formal audiobook plans also haven't been revealed. The two-volume approach nevertheless makes sense considering just how much story remains unresolved heading into the finale.

The Beautiful Place Will Finally Reach The Twelfth Floor

WARNING: MAJOR SPOILERS FOR BOOK NINE TO FOLLOW !!!Dinniman has already confirmed one of the most important details about Book 9, which is that the story will center on the Twelfth Floor and the Celestial Ascendancy. The Ascendancy has been looming over DCC for several books, with gods, divine quests, sponsors, and the dungeon's wider political system becoming increasingly important. Reaching the Twelfth Floor means those storylines will finally come to a head in the epic finale.

Dinniman has broadly characterized the upcoming conflict as involving the Ascendancy battles and "gods doing god things," suggesting a dramatic escalation beyond even the enormous Faction Wars storyline. The Celestial Ascendancy is essentially the Twelfth Floor's major competition, with powerful outside figures backing different gods in a battle for the Celestial Throne.

A Parade of Horribles also radically changed the circumstances surrounding the endgame. Several developments now appear particularly important heading into Book 9:

• Scolopendra survives the Eleventh Floor. Rather than killing the level-500 boss outright, Carl's plan results in Scolopendra being transformed, allowing the crawlers to complete the encounter while leaving the creature alive.
• The dungeon is now on a much tighter clock. The Ascendancy has been triggered, and once a winner is determined, the surviving crawlers will have only a brief window before the dungeon begins collapsing.
• Samantha is a key player. Book 8 ties her even more closely to the gods and the deeper mythology surrounding the dungeon, making her true identity and purpose one of the biggest unresolved questions entering the finale.
• The survivors are no longer all together. Some crawlers reach different areas through the Casino portal, including Sheol, meaning Book 9 will likely follow multiple groups and conflicts rather than keeping everyone focused solely on the Ascendancy.
• The dungeon AI is becoming an even larger threat. Its growing independence and influence remain central to the endgame, particularly as the conflict on the Twelfth Floor expands beyond the crawlers themselves.

A Parade of Horribles also reveals that Scolopendra and the legendary nine-tier attack are connected to older events in the wider history of the galaxy, reinforcing that the Crawl's mythology is far more than elaborate set dressing. Book 9 now has to reconcile those revelations in some way.

Dungeon Crawler Carl Book 9 Has A Ton Of Mysteries To Resolve

Given the sheer amount of questions still outstanding heading into Book 9, it makes sense that things are being split into two big chunks. Two volumes may ultimately be necessary simply because of how many long-running Dungeon Crawler Carl mysteries remain unresolved heading into the finale. Book 9 has to provide answers to questions Dinniman has been building across the entire series, which is a tall order and arguably one of the most challenging tasks in epic fantasy storytelling (just as George R.R. Martin).

Among the biggest unresolved threads are:

• What ultimately happens to Earth, and whether anything remains to return to after the Crawl ends.
• Whether Carl and Donut can actually escape the dungeon, or if survival now requires destroying the system itself.
• The true nature and purpose of Dungeon Crawler World, including how much of the Crawl's mythology is real versus constructed.
• The System AI's growing independence, and what happens if it fully breaks free of Syndicate control.
• The Primals, whose importance has only grown as the series has revealed more about the dungeon's deeper history.
• The wider Syndicate, including whether Carl's rebellion can meaningfully threaten the powers responsible for running the Crawl.
• The Dungeon Anarchist's Cookbook, its larger purpose, and how it ultimately factors into Carl's endgame.
• Scolopendra and the nine-tier attack, particularly after A Parade of Horribles connected them to much older and more consequential events.
• Samantha's true identity and history, which are tied to the gods and the dungeon's ancient mythology.
• The Celestial Ascendancy, including who wins the competition and what that victory means for the surviving crawlers.
• Carl's remaining divine quests, many of which have been building toward the Twelfth Floor.
• The revolution unfolding inside and outside the dungeon, and whether it can outlast the Crawl itself.
• The fate of the surviving crawlers and Carl's closest allies, including Mordecai, whose Twelfth Floor form Dinniman has already teased.

Carl and Donut themselves remain at the center of all of these questions. Their original objective was simply to survive, but Carl has become someone actively fighting the structure of the Crawl at this point. Whether his story ends with escape, destruction of Dungeon Crawler World, revolution against the Syndicate, or something else entirely remains one of the finale's biggest unanswered questions.

Donut's fate is another major question, as the finale offers no guarantee that Carl's closest companion will survive the endgame (Gods forbid), even if killing her would be one of the series' most devastating possible outcomes. What is clear is that Book 9 is being positioned as the culmination of nearly every major mystery, conflict, and relationship Dinniman has been building since Carl first entered the dungeon, and fans are in for a truly epic conclusion to the phenomenon that is Dungeon Crawler Carl.
