Arun Dorasamy's case to go on trial in February [WATCH]

NIBONG TEBAL: Activist Arumugam Dorasamy, who is charged with religious provocation, will stand trial on Feb 1 and 2 next year.

This follows deputy public prosecutor Airina Syazreen Zainurin informing the magistrate's court that a representation submitted by the defence had been rejected.

The representation was submitted in early July.

Airina also told the court that the prosecution would call about seven witnesses.

Magistrate Balqis Roslin then fixed Feb 1 and 2 next year for the trial.

In March, Arumugam, 56, claimed trial to a charge of making a statement with the intention of causing public alarm.

According to the charge, Arumugam allegedly posted the statement on his Instagram account.

It was reportedly seen and heard by Nor Al Firdaus Nor Al Huda at a shopping centre in Batu Kawan at about 3.45pm on March 12, 2025.

The statement was allegedly made with the intention of causing public alarm, which could incite a person to commit an offence against public tranquillity.

He was charged under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum sentence of two years' imprisonment, a fine, or both, upon conviction.

Outside the court, Arumugam's lawyer, T. Gunaseelan, confirmed that the prosecution had provided the defence with the necessary documents.

Meanwhile, Arumugam welcomed the decision to proceed with a full trial, describing it as the appropriate forum to establish the truth.

"I received the rejection from the prosecution. From the beginning, I have always wanted a trial to establish what is true.

"A trial is the right forum, so I am delighted with the outcome and we look forward to the trial on Feb 1 and 2," he added.
