Valheim Meets Ancient Egypt In New Open-World RPG You Can Play Free Now

Sharmila is an engineer-turned-gaming hardware journalist and freelance contributor at ScreenRant who has been covering the gaming and tech industry since 2021. While she first built her expertise writing about video games, she has since pivoted towards gaming hardware, with a focus on PC components, peripherals, handhelds, and performance-driven tech. When she’s not testing gear or writing about the latest hardware trends, she can usually be found diving into competitive shooters or keeping up with the evolving esports scene.

What if you could trade the forests of Valheim for the banks of the Nile, build a home in the Egyptian afterlife, and explore ancient ruins without spending a penny? If this sounds like your kind of game, you don’t have to wait for the full release to give it a try.

Fields of Aaru, an upcoming open-world life simulation game from indie developer Zymartu Games, is all about what I just described. Set in the mythical afterlife of ancient Egyptian beliefs, the game lets you farm, fish, craft items, befriend villagers, and venture into the desert in search of hidden secrets. Better yet, you can try its free demo on Steam right now.

Fields Of Aaru Lets You Build a New Life Along The Nile

Fields of Aaru 1

Unlike Valheim, where surviving the wilderness and fighting dangerous creatures are central to the experience, Fields of Aaru takes a more relaxed approach. You arrive in Aaru, a paradise inspired by ancient Egyptian mythology, where your job is to build a home and help a struggling riverside community get back on its feet.

Your days can revolve around growing crops, fishing in the Nile, gathering materials, and crafting tools. You can also learn traditional crafts, including shaping stone and firing clay, as you gradually improve your surroundings. There are villagers to meet, quests to complete, and plenty of work to do if you want to restore the settlement.

However, farming is not as simple as planting seeds and waiting for a harvest. You can reshape the land and dig channels to direct water from the Nile towards your fields. This gives you more control over your farm and lets you turn dry patches of land into productive farmland. The game also allows you to customize your character and decorate your home, giving you room to make your corner of Aaru feel like your own.

Explore Pyramids, Tombs, And The Egyptian Desert In Fields Of Aaru

Fields of Aaru 2

Life along the Nile is only part of the Fields of Aaru experience. Once you are ready to leave your home behind, you can venture into the desert to discover hidden oases, ancient ruins, towering pyramids, and tombs buried beneath the sand.

As part of the expeditions, you can collect rare materials and uncover lost knowledge that helps you craft new items and expand your settlement. However, the desert requires some preparation, so carrying water and looking for shade matters when traveling beyond the riverbanks.

You can also discover shrines and make offerings to Egyptian gods to earn their blessings. Restoring ancient obelisks is another part of the adventure, unlocking new regions and ways to travel across the world.

Fields of Aaru has a free demo available on Steam, and the developers recently updated it with additional character customization options, improved visuals, irrigation mechanics, and more languages. The demo also includes features such as giving gifts to villagers based on their individual preferences.

The full game is still listed as coming soon, with a release window planned for the fourth quarter of 2026. For now, the demo offers a chance to explore its Egyptian-inspired Valheim-like world and see whether its mix of farming, crafting, and desert exploration appeals to you.
