RIP | Fairbairn College mourns Grade 8 learner Shiloh Mngomeni

A Cape Town school community is mourning the sudden death of one of its youngest learners.

Fairbairn College has paid tribute to Grade 8 learner Shiloh Mngomeni, who died at the age of 14.

The school announced her passing on Monday, 21 September, describing a young learner who had already left a lasting impression on her teachers and classmates.

Reports indicate that Shiloh died following a sudden health-related emergency. Further details surrounding her death have not been publicly disclosed.

Fairbairn College remembers Shiloh

Shiloh, who was born on 3 December 2011, previously attended Goodwood Park Primary School before starting high school at Fairbairn College.

She threw herself into school life and joined the Photography Society and Tennis Club.

Teachers remembered her as a diligent and respectful learner who took pride in her schoolwork.

But it was the small things that stood out.

Shiloh reportedly made a habit of hugging her register teacher before leaving the classroom each day – a gesture that has become one of the memories her school community now holds close.

Fairbairn College urged learners, parents and the wider community to support Shiloh’s family during an exceptionally difficult time.

“Your smile, your kindness, your dedication and your hugs will be remembered,” the school said in its tribute.

Teachers pay tribute to 14-year-old

Former teachers also shared messages remembering the teenager.

One of her former teachers, Bianca Mouton, described Shiloh as a sweet, friendly and loving learner who had left a special impression on her.

Other teachers remembered her beautiful smile and said it had been a privilege to teach her.

A candle-lighting was also held at Fairbairn College in Shiloh’s honour as the school community came together to remember her life.

Shiloh had already endured the loss of her mother several years ago. She leaves behind her grandmother, younger sister, extended family and friends.

The school has asked that the family’s privacy be respected while they grieve.

Paul Roos also mourns young learner

Shiloh’s death comes days after another Western Cape school community lost a young learner.

Paul Roos Gymnasium recently announced the death of 15-year-old Grade 9 learner Nico Caine, who passed away on Thursday, 17 September.
