The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued warnings for severe thunderstorms that may cause damage to infrastructure and vehicles in four provinces. The rest of the country will experience cloudy and cool to warm conditions with isolated showers and thundershowers.

Impact-based warnings

Orange Level 5: Severe thunderstorms in the Hantam and Karoo Hoogland Districts of the Northern Cape and the Central Karoo District of the Western Cape. Expect potential injuries, danger to life, and damage to infrastructure and vehicles.

Yellow Level 2: Severe thunderstorms in the Karoo Hoogland District, southern Northern Cape, vast parts of the Western Cape, south-western and western KwaZulu-Natal, and southern Free State. Expect localised damage to vehicles and infrastructure, excessive lightning, and hail.

In the SAWS’s colour-coded weather warning system, yellow indicates a moderate risk of impact that requires caution and awareness, while orange indicates that a higher-risk impact is expected, requiring increased attention and preparation.

The SAWS uses the numbers to indicate the likelihood of weather-related impacts. Levels 2 and 6 are high, level 5 is medium, and levels 4 and 8 are low.
