Indonesia seeks platform accessibility for visually impaired groups

Translate

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Social Affairs reaffirmed its commitment to accommodating feedback from visually impaired groups and coordinating with the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs to ensure screen-reading features are integrated across national digital platforms.

Social Affairs Minister Saifullah Yusuf said in Jakarta on Wednesday that the ministry is stepping up discussions with disability associations to adapt technological advancements for vulnerable groups.

"We are continuing our discussions with disability associations, including those for the visually impaired. We will gather their input and adapt the technology accordingly," Saifullah said.

He explained that the move is part of preparations to enforce derivative rules for the Government Regulation on Concessions and Government Regulation No. 39/2020 on Reasonable Accommodations for Persons with Disabilities, which covers eight priority sectors, including internet services and digital infrastructure.

Full implementation of the regulations is targeted for 2028, with the current transition period being used to finalize technical rules alongside the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs.

"This includes determining how the regulations will be applied across eight sectors, including internet services. While discussions are ongoing, we will further discuss the input from visually impaired communities with the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs," Saifullah noted.

In addition to pushing for technology standardization across ministries, the Ministry of Social Affairs is optimizing assessment-based empowerment training programs for visually impaired groups.

The minister affirmed that his ministry maintains ongoing communication with the Indonesian Association for the Visually Impaired (Pertuni) to develop training modules for the utilization of digital features that best meet needs on the ground.
