Indonesia urges China to support ASEAN centrality, peace

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia has called on China to bolster regional stability and peace while reaffirming its support for ASEAN centrality, as Southeast Asia navigates an increasingly complex geopolitical landscape.

Coordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs Djamari Chaniago highlighted the crucial role of bilateral ties between Jakarta and Beijing in underpinning regional security during China's 77th National Day celebration in Jakarta on Tuesday evening (September 22).

"Indonesia will continue to strengthen ASEAN centrality and encourage a regional architecture that is open, inclusive, transparent, and cooperation-oriented," Djamari stated.

"In this context, Indonesia hopes that the partnership with China can continue to make a positive contribution to the creation of a peaceful, stable, inclusive, and prosperous region,” the minister added.

He emphasized that regional peace cannot be achieved through exclusive frameworks. Instead, it must be cultivated through dialogue, mutual trust, adherence to international law, and a commitment to resolving differences peacefully.

Djamari noted that Indonesia-China cooperation extends beyond trade and investment, encompassing strategic political and security partnerships, maritime connectivity, cultural exchanges, and coordinated responses to complex global challenges.

He welcomed the outcomes of the China-Indonesia Comprehensive Strategic Dialogue held in Jakarta on August 21, along with the inaugural '2+2' ministerial dialogue involving the foreign and defense ministers of both nations on the same day.

"Trust between Indonesia and China is built through consistency, transparency, communication, and real cooperation," Djamari added.

Echoing the sentiment, China’s Chargé d’Affaires to Indonesia Zhou Kan reaffirmed Beijing’s commitment to expanding concrete cooperation and delivering on shared agreements.

"We are also ready to advance the China-Indonesia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership to an even higher level and work together to create a China-Indonesia community with a shared future," Zhou stated.
