Indonesia seeks digital capabilities beyond market role: Ministry

Indonesia is determined to strengthen its position in the global digital landscape by building domestic capabilities rather than remaining merely a market for digital products and services, the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs stated

Director General of Public Communication and Media Fifi Aleyda Yahya highlighted the vision, which she said requires strong cross-sector collaboration, during the ANTARA Business Forum 2026, held under the theme "The Synergy Horizon: Positioning Indonesia for the Next Decade" in Jakarta on Wednesday.

"Synergy must deliver concrete impacts; I believe we all agree with this notion. Over the next decade, we will move from digital adoption to digital value creation," she noted.

Aleyda Yahya added that the ministry envisions Indonesia evolving from a country known primarily as a large digital market into one with strong digital capabilities.

To that end, she said, the government is pursuing digital transformation based on three key pillars: connectivity, growth, and security, while maintaining a balance between digital sovereignty and technological advancement.

On the first pillar, she said the goal is to move beyond expanding network coverage toward creating meaningful connectivity, where internet access translates into tangible economic benefits and opportunities.

The official also highlighted the rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI), stressing the need for Indonesia to become a developer rather than merely a user, especially given that its AI adoption rate has reached 92 percent.

Accomplishing that objective will require improvements in both infrastructure and human resources, Yahya added, noting that talent development lies at the heart of the growth pillar of Indonesia's digital transformation.

"Infrastructure and technology will not generate added value without skilled talent. Therefore, strengthening digital talent while developing infrastructure and industry must go hand in hand," she said.

Addressing the third pillar, Aleyda Yahya underscored the importance of incorporating security, privacy, and safety-by-design principles into digital innovation. She emphasized that data security and protection must be embedded in the design of technology.

She reiterated that the three pillars are geared toward strengthening Indonesia's digital sovereignty, stressing that the approach is not intended to undermine the country's investment climate.

"Digital sovereignty does not mean isolating ourselves. Digital sovereignty means having the capacity to shape and determine our own digital future," she said.
