Jakarta (ANTARA) - Two Indonesian researchers have received Indroyono Soesilo Awards at the 47th Asian Conference on Remote Sensing (ACRS) in New Delhi on October 16, 2026, for their research on forest mapping and regional language documentation.

According to a press release from the Indonesian Embassy in Washington, received in Jakarta on Sunday, the awards recognize innovation and contributions to the field of remote sensing.

Yustinus Seno of Auriga Nusantara Corp. received the main award for his research mapping Indonesia’s forest ecosystems annually from 1990 to 2024 using Landsat satellite data, cloud computing, and machine learning under the MapBiomas Indonesia initiative.

An “Honorable Mention” was awarded to Serliah Nur for her research mapping language vitality and planning language revitalization efforts in Tana Luwu, South Sulawesi. Her work combines Geographic Information Systems (GIS) with sociolinguistic analysis to support the preservation of regional languages.

The other two award recipients were from Japan and India.

Serenee Osman of Nakanihon Air Co. Ltd. in Japan received the “Technical Excellence” award for using airborne LiDAR, satellite imagery, and bathymetric surveys to assess landscape changes resulting from the 2024 Noto Peninsula earthquake.

Meanwhile, Ankitha Reddy of the National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC), under the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), received the “Special Recognition” award for the Bhoonidhi platform, which expands access to Earth observation data.

The Indroyono Soesilo Award is named after Prof. Dr. Ir. Indroyono Soesilo, a senior remote sensing expert recognized as a pioneer in developing the technology in Indonesia and a co-founder of the Indonesian Remote Sensing Society (MAPIN).

Indroyono Soesilo currently serves as Indonesia’s ambassador to the United States.

Held on October 12–16 under the theme “Remote Sensing for Future Earth: Innovation, Inclusion & Impact,” ACRS 2026 brought together around 800 scientists, space agency representatives, academics, and geospatial professionals from more than 30 countries.

The conference covered eight key tracks, including sustainable agriculture, Geospatial Artificial Intelligence (GeoAI), satellite and drone sensors, the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), disaster mitigation, and the use of data to support public policy.

The event was organized in collaboration with the Asian Association on Remote Sensing, the Indian Society of Remote Sensing, and the Indian Society of Geomatics, with support from organizations including ISRO, NRSC, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), India’s Ministry of Earth Sciences, and other institutions.
