Mohamad Hasan to lead Malaysian delegation to UNGA

NEW YORK: Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan will lead the Malaysian delegation to the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York from Sept 23 to 27.

Malaysia's Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN), Datuk Nadzirah Osman, said Mohamad would deliver the National Statement, reaffirming Malaysia's commitment to multilateralism, international law and efforts to strengthen the effectiveness of the UN.

"At a time when multilateralism is being questioned and faces an increasingly apparent crisis of confidence, the international community must move beyond rhetoric and commit to tangible collective action.

"No country can address today's global challenges alone," she said at a media briefing here today.

Nadzirah said the Palestinian issue and geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, UN reform and the UN Security Council, development gaps and the Sustainable Development Goals, and the UN80 Initiative were also expected to be among the key focuses.

Mohamad's National Statement is scheduled to be delivered during the UNGA General Debate on Sept 26 at 4.30pm New York time.

"This is the third time Mohamad has led the Malaysian delegation to the UNGA since taking over as Foreign Minister in December 2023," she added.

The 81st UNGA session is themed "Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations that Delivers for All."

A total of 81 heads of state, one crown prince, eight vice-presidents, 50 heads of government, seven deputy prime ministers and 42 ministers are scheduled to deliver their respective National Statements during the General Debate, which will take place from Sept 22 to 28.
