Chaminda Vaas set to join Delhi Capitals as fast bowling coach

Former Sri Lanka fast bowler Chaminda Vaas is set to take over as Delhi Capitals’ fast bowling coach as the franchise reshapes its coaching staff ahead of the next IPL season.

Although the franchise is yet to make Vaas’ appointment official, several sources have told Sportstar that the former Sri Lanka international has linked up with the team at its preparatory camp and trials in New Delhi.

Vaas, 51, brings a wealth of international and coaching experience to the Capitals. One of Sri Lanka’s most successful fast bowlers, he played 111 Tests and 322 ODIs, taking 355 and 400 wickets, respectively.

A key member of Sri Lanka’s 1996 World Cup-winning side, Vaas went on to enjoy a career spanning more than a decade at the highest level.

He has also worked in various coaching capacities since his retirement, with Sri Lanka as well as franchises, and his experience in developing and working with fast bowlers is expected to be an important addition to the Capitals’ setup.

India’s veteran leg-spinner Amit Mishra has also joined the camp and will work as a spin coach. Mishra, one of the IPL’s most prolific wicket-takers, will bring his extensive experience of the tournament to the Capitals’ bowling group.

As reported by this publication earlier, the franchise will also have a new head coach. Former India captain Sourav Ganguly will take over from Hemang Badani, with former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh joining as assistant coach.

The changes mark a significant overhaul of the Capitals’ coaching setup following a disappointing 2025 campaign, when the team failed to qualify for the Playoffs. The revamped group will now oversee preparations as the franchise looks to put together a more competitive campaign in 2027.
