Jack Lowden “too old” for Bond, says ‘Slow Horses’ co-star: “We’ve talked about it loads”

Jack Lowden may be just outside the age range to play the new James Bond, according to his Slow Horses co-star Nick Mohammed.

Lowden, who plays River Cartwright in the Apple TV spy show, is one of several contenders for the coveted role of 007, alongside actors such as Jacob Elordi and Callum Turner. However, at 36 years old, he may be outside the range of what franchise owners Amazon are looking for, according to his fellow castmember.

Mohammed told The Telegraph: “Like I would know, but also I just suspect not… We’ve been talking about it loads, actually. I would love it to be true. I sort of don’t think it is.” He continued: “I’d heard rumours – as everyone heard rumours – that it was going to be a younger Bond, that they wanted someone possibly more in their late twenties rather than in their thirties. So we’ll see.”

The doubt comes after James Bond author Charlie Higson dismissed the idea of Lowden in the role. “I like him, but it’s like when Tom Hiddleston was in the running — not a convincing hand-to-hand fighter,” he told The Times. “With Daniel Craig you can believe him kicking the shit out of someone. And you’ve got to believe that with Bond.”

The search for the new 007 has officially begun, with Amazon MGM studios announcing the start of the process in May. Numerous names have emerged as contenders to replace Daniel Craig, who bowed out in 2021’s No Time To Die. If the film is released after February 2028, it will break the record for the longest gap between Bond movies.

The latest Bond adventure will be directed by Denis Villeneuve and written by Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight. Recently, the producer of the forthcoming movie recently revealed that the casting of the new James Bond could be announced by the end of the year.
