Police teargas disrupts FKF Special General Meeting in Meru

NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 7-The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Special General Meeting (SGM) in Meru was disrupted on Saturday after officers from the Police Rapid Deployment Unit (RDU) fired teargas into the meeting venue, forcing delegates and federation officials to abandon the proceedings.

The incident occurred at Three Steers Hotel, where members of the FKF General Assembly had assembled and were seated awaiting the commencement of the meeting.

In an update issued on November 7, FKF said the meeting had yet to begin following the police operation, which disrupted proceedings before delegates could conduct the business for which they had convened.

“The FKF Special General Meeting (SGM) is yet to commence following an incident in which officers from the Police Rapid Deployment Unit (RDU) moved into the meeting venue and discharged teargas into the meeting room, where delegates were seated awaiting the start of proceedings,” the federation said.

FKF expressed concern over the circumstances surrounding the police operation, saying it had interfered with a constitutional process convened by members of the General Assembly under the federation’s constitution.

The disruption also saw FKF officials leave the hotel with their hands raised as they exited the premises amid the police operation.

The incident occurred shortly after McDonald Mariga arrived at the venue accompanied by RDU officers, according to footage and accounts from the scene.

FKF said it would provide further updates as the situation develops, with the status of the Special General Meeting remaining uncertain.
