Steam regularly offers up free promotions through DLC packs or even full games. Just recently, for example, the well-reviewed horror game Pony Island was free until October 12. Whether it's through Steam's free weekend trials or a promotion from the developer, these limited-time deals are a great way to discover new games.

Typically, games either become free on Steam thanks to demos or because they're already free-to-play, but the service is good about also offering up limited-time deals that will let you experience certain games without having to purchase them. Of course, there are also plenty of games and DLC packs that are yours to keep forever. That's the case with this newest Stream download, which is both 100% free and 100% yours to keep.

Right now, Steam users will have more to enjoy in October 2026 thanks to a promotion with the tactical FPS game Squad. You can download the following for free:

  • Squad Weapon Skins - Recon Team Pack

The Recon Team Pack is free to keep, but the offer will expire in 10 days, which is October 25, 2026. SteamDB has the listing going live around 12 pm ET. Considering most packs for Squad go for $11.99 or higher each, this is a pretty solid deal if you play the game already. And if you don't play, the game's well-received and might be worth your time if you love the genre.

Releasing in 2020, Squad currently has "Very Positive" reviews in English on Steam. You can purchase the base game for $39.99, with various upgrades and premium editions available. With 100-player battles and base-building, the game "bridges the gap between arcade shooter and military realism."

Players next to downed allies in Squad

Along with this new arrival, a number of free items are also leaving Steam today. This includes the Rotwood Draken Armory Pack, as well as the MXGP 26 Scrubdesignz Liveries promotional package. A number of other free promotions continue for now: Voidtrain's Big Catch DLC Pack expires in 3 days, and you can snag Gear.Club Unlimited 3's Signature Pack until October 22.

If you're looking for more free games on Steam, all four of these are available to download now either as demos or free-to-play titles:

  • Gus Game
  • Major Mutt
  • The Crimson Scales
  • Quentin Playtime

Whether you're looking for an 800-hour RPG behemoth or just something to beat in a single weekend, there are a lot of freebies to choose from on Steam right now. And if you play Squad, be sure to get the latest free promotional pack while it's available this month.
