Welder sentenced to 7 years’ jail for causing death of wife’s lover

The High Court here sentenced a welder to seven years and six months in prison for causing the death of his wife’s alleged boyfriend four years ago.

Justice Noor Hisham Ismail meted out the sentence to Chin Ngit Soon after he pleaded guilty to a reduced charge under Section 304(a) of the Penal Code of causing death by negligence.

The judge ordered for the sentence to start from November 2022, when Chin was arrested.

Chin was initially charged with murder but offered the reduced charge by the Attorney-General’s Chambers.

He caused the death of Wong Kim Miew at the carpark of a supermarket in Bandar Tun Hussein Onn, Cheras, on Nov 25, 2022.

According to the facts of the case, Chin found out that his wife had an affair with Wong a few months earlier and pleaded with her to end the relationship.

On Nov 25, 2022, he discovered that his wife and Wong were together in the latter’s vehicle, and he took a knife, intending to “threaten” Wong.

However, a scuffle broke out and Chin accidentally stabbed Wong. Wong then drove out of the carpark, but stopped after 150m.

Chin subsequently drove Wong to a private hospital but the hospital refused to admit him.

He then took Wong to Hospital Serdang where doctors treated him. Wong died nine hours later.

In handing down the sentence, Hisham said Chin was driven by emotion and his actions were not premeditated.

He said the facts of the case showed that the fatal injury was due to a struggle rather than a planned attack.

“The accused also took the victim to get medical treatment immediately after the incident, driving from one hospital to another.

“He even waited at the emergency department until he knew the victim was stable before returning home. His actions were inconsistent with (intention of) malice or disregard towards the deceased.”
