PDP moves to harmonise national, senatorial campaigns

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has begun efforts to strengthen coordination between its national and grassroots campaign structures as the party prepares for the forthcoming election season.

The move came to the fore following a closed-door meeting between the PDP Senatorial Candidate for Kano Central, Mr. Nafiu Sankara, and the party’s Presidential Candidate, Mr.Sandy Onor.

The meeting, which focused on campaign strategy and political mobilisation, is expected to form part of broader efforts by the opposition party to present a coordinated message to voters across the country.

Discussions between the two politicians reportedly centred on the need for issue-based campaigns, inclusive governance, economic development and strengthening the connection between the party’s national agenda and its candidates at the senatorial and grassroots levels.

Sankara, who is seeking to represent Kano Central in the National Assembly, has built his political profile around grassroots engagement, particularly in youth empowerment, education and healthcare.

He has supported vocational training and mentorship initiatives aimed at equipping young people with practical skills, while also promoting educational opportunities and healthcare interventions within communities in Kano Central.

His supporters say his grassroots engagement has helped strengthen his relationship with constituents and positioned him as one of the PDP’s key figures in the Kano political landscape.

The meeting with Onor is therefore being viewed as significant to the PDP’s efforts to consolidate its presence in Kano and other parts of the country, particularly as opposition parties seek to challenge the ruling party in forthcoming elections.

Both leaders were said to have reaffirmed the importance of people-centred leadership, transparency and accountability, with emphasis on policies capable of addressing economic hardship, unemployment and other challenges confronting Nigerians.

Kano Central is regarded as politically significant given Kano State’s large electorate and its influence on national electoral outcomes. The performance of the PDP in the district could consequently have implications beyond the senatorial contest and contribute to the party’s wider electoral calculations.

The engagement between Sankara and Onor consequently highlights the PDP’s attempt to link its national political message with candidates capable of mobilising support at the grassroots.

As campaigns gather momentum, the party is expected to intensify consultations among its candidates and stakeholders in an effort to forge a common strategy ahead of the elections.
