Man dies after crashing car into Bondi shop
A man is fighting for his life after crashing into a gelato store in Sydney’s eastern suburbs, closing a neighbouring barber shop owned by footballer Angus Crichton.
The crash occurred about 1.40pm on Tuesday when a Mazda left the road at the intersection of Beach Road and Campbell Parade at Bondi Beach, crashing into the front of the Luca & Luca gelato and matcha bar.
The 63-year-old man is believed to have suffered a medical episode while driving. He has been taken to hospital in a critical condition.
The Luca & Luca shopfront was damaged, but no other injuries were reported.
Traffic was diverted and motorists were told to avoid the area in the aftermath of the crash.
The neighbouring AC FLO barbershop, owned by Crichton, has closed for the afternoon.
“We apologise for any inconvenience and appreciate your understanding,” a message posted to the shop’s social media said.
Crichton played what is expected to be his final NRL game earlier in October, helping the Sydney Roosters to a Grand Final victory over the Newcastle Knights. He will switch codes to play rugby union for the NSW Waratahs in 2027 after 215 games in the NRL.
