Indonesia gaming industry eyes US$3.3 billion boost by 2030

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia’s video game industry could contribute up to US$3.3 billion in economic value and support 476,600 jobs by 2030 under an accelerated growth scenario, according to a report by Tencent and Access Partnership.
The projections are outlined in a report titled The Video Game Industry: Unlocking the Next Level of Economic and Social Development in Southeast Asia, jointly published by technology company Tencent and public policy consultancy Access Partnership.
Speaking in Jakarta on Thursday, Monrawee Ampolpittayanant, Tencent’s director of global public affairs for Asia-Pacific, said Indonesia had a significant opportunity to transform its large domestic gaming market into a thriving creative production ecosystem.
“Within it, local studios can develop original IP, build sustainable businesses and connect with audiences worldwide,” Monrawee said.
The report estimates that Indonesia’s gaming industry will generate US$1.3 billion in revenue by the end of 2025, equivalent to 0.12 percent of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP), while supporting 257,400 jobs.
However, hardware and peripherals account for the largest share of the domestic gaming market, at 47 percent, followed by esports at 24 percent and retail at 22 percent.
Game development and publishing account for just 7 percent of the industry’s total economic contribution, highlighting the relatively limited role of locally developed and published games in the broader market.
To unlock greater economic benefits, the report recommends several strategic measures.
First, it calls for expanded financing opportunities for local studios through prototype grants, matching funds and low-interest loans.
Second, it recommends maximizing the value of local intellectual property (IP) by streamlining registration, valuation and monetization processes.
Finally, the report advocates strengthening talent development through specialized curricula, practical work placements and initiatives to expand international business networks.
At the regional level, Indonesia accounts for 21 percent of the video game industry’s economic contribution across Southeast Asia, matching Thailand’s share.
Malaysia leads with 31 percent, while Singapore and the Philippines account for 16 percent and 12 percent, respectively.
Across Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines and Singapore, the video game industry is projected to contribute US$8.2 billion in economic value by 2025. Under an accelerated growth scenario, that figure could rise to US$14.2 billion by 2030, with the industry supporting up to 1.16 million jobs.
