IN PHOTOS: Discovering Albay’s diverse birdlife

Translate

MANILA, Philippines—Beyond the familiar mayas and herons, the province of Albay is home to a diverse array of birds, including species found only in the Philippines and migratory birds that visit the country.

This diversity is captured in a collection of wildlife photographs by Dr. Gianina M. Andes of Daraga, Albay, who has been documenting birds in different parts of the province since 2025.

Featured by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Bicol Region through its “EKwento” series, the photographs offer a closer look at the avian wildlife that often goes unnoticed in everyday surroundings.

Beyond documenting wildlife, Andes’ photographs demonstrate how birdwatching and nature photography can help communities recognize and appreciate the biodiversity around them.

The images also serve as a reminder that discovering local wildlife does not always require traveling far, but can begin by paying closer attention to the birds sharing our surroundings.

The DENR Bicol feature encourages greater appreciation of these species and the habitats that sustain them.

The Philippines’ birdlife, as documented in Albay, offers a glimpse of the natural diversity waiting to be discovered and appreciated.
