'Varanasi': After 'Baahubali', SS Rajamouli creates new fictional language for Mahesh Babu and Priyanka Chopra starrer

After getting fans to speak in Kiliki, director SS Rajamouli is reportedly set to create a new fictional language for his film ‘Varanasi’.

SS Rajamouli to create new language for 'Varanasi'

Taking fans on a journey through time with Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Prithviraj Sukumaran, the director is reportedly set to create a new fictional language, specifically for the film.

As per a report on Variety India, a linguistic expert has been hired to develop the language, which the characters will speak during one of their journeys through time.

The new language will even reportedly even have ancient script. The report states that this detail will be highlighted when the characters enter a cave whose walls bear the incriptions of the ancient text. The film will reportedly see the characters trying to decipher the writings to uncover hidden mysteries.

SS Rajamouli created Kiliki for 'Baahubali'

While filmmakers will rarely create a new script and language, it is no new feat for Rajamouli, who previously did the same for ‘Baahubali: The Beginning’. Back in 2015, he collaborated with lyricist and screenwriter Madhan Karky to create Kiliki, also known as Kilikili, a fictional language spoken by the Kalakeya warriors who attacked the kingdom of Mahishmati. However, Kiliki was primarily a spoken language in the film.

Films that featured fictional languages

This level of detailing has only been pulled off in few other franchises like George R. R. Martin’s ‘Game of Thrones’ which featured Dothraki and High Valyrian and J. R. R. Tolkien's 'The Lord of the Rings' which featured elaborate languages and scripts for Middle-earth.Unlike the other films that went on to become movie franchises, ‘Varanasi’ is set to be only film and will be released in theatres on April 7, 2027.
