One of the best horror series of the 2010s returns in a gorgeous new edition that is sure to please fans.

Shaun Corley has been with ScreenRant for over 5 years, and is currently the Coordinator for PR and Outreach for the Comics Team.

One of the premiere horror comics of the century is returning in a gorgeous new edition. Once a staple of the industry, horror titles fell out of favor in the 1950s, before returning in the 1970s. Yet the turn of the century saw an explosion in independent horror comics, such as IDW Publishing’s 30 Days of Night.

Interestingly enough, Archie Comics was also responsible for the horror comic boom. By the early 2010s, the publisher had begun shedding its traditional image, and embracing more forward-thinking stories. Then, in 2013, it released Afterlife With Archie #1. Written by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and drawn by Francesco Francavilla, Afterlife With Archie saw a zombie outbreak hit Riverdale. Afterlife With Archie was dark and gory, unlike anything the publisher had released before. The book was a smash hit, and helped launch Francavilla’s career, establishing him as one of horror comics’ premiere artists.

The success of Afterlife With Archie inspired the publisher to spin off an entire line of horror-themed takes on the Riverdale gang. The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, starring the titular teenage witch, was also a success, inspiring a series on Netflix. Other titles in the Archie Horror line include Jughead the Hunger and Vampironica. Now, over a decade after Afterlife With Archie terrified fans, it is getting the deluxe treatment.

Afterlife With Archie Returns In A Beautiful New Edition

Today, Oni Press, in conjunction with Archie Comics, will launch a Kickstarter for Afterlife With Archie: Mausoleum Edition Volume One. This oversized (11x17’’) hardcover reprints the first six issues of Afterlife With Archie in glorious black and white. By doing so, fans can appreciate Francavilla’s beautiful art even more. Now, ScreenRant is pleased to exclusively reveal Francavilla’s cover for Afterlife With Archie: Mausoleum Edition Volume One. A reworked version of the cover to Afterlife With Archie’s first issue, it will remind fans why they fell in love with the series in the first place.

Afterlife With Archie arrived early in the 2010s, just as horror comics were continuing to make gains in sales and acclaim. It also debuted during a period of change for Archie Comics, and these two factors came together to make Afterlife With Archie an instant “hype” book. The creative team delivered, and Afterlife With Archie would go on to popularize horror comics even more. Archie’s own Horror imprint was crucial in the current genre renaissance.
