LATEST outlook for SASSA Childcare Grants in October 2026

It’s as if the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) Childcare Grants in October 2026 are being deprioritised, with an official payment date of Tuesday 6 October 2026. Meanwhile, Older Persons is being paid out one-week prior, on Friday 2 October. As recipients already know, there are three different childcare grants set aside for approximately 13-million recipients.

This sheer volume of beneficiaries makes SASSA Childcare Grants in October 2026 the largest, most expensive social-protection programme. Unfortunately, those desperately relying on that money face a longer-than-usual gap since September’s last pay date, namely 32 days …

SASSA CHILDCARE GRANTS IN OCTOBER 2026

Similarly, while civil society debates the merit of October grant top-ups, we know for sure that R580 Child Support will not increase. SASSA has not done so for two consecutive years, and is even less likely to do so in 2026. According to The South African, the agency wants to reduce the number of Child Support beneficiaries by 696 000 in the next two years. The National Treasury that is responsible for SASSA budgets wants to see a reduction in the coming years:

• 2026 – 248 000
• 2027 – 232 000
• 2028 – 216 000

HOW MUCH WILL SASSA CHILDCARE GRANTS IN OCTOBER 2026 BE?

Nevertheless, until official notice from the agency, SASSA Childcare Grants in October 2026 are unchanged:

• Child Support pays R580, up by R20 from R560 back in April 2026.
• Foster Child pays R1 290, up by R40 from R1 250 back in April 2026.
• Care Dependency (Disability for under 18s) pays R2 400 up by R80 from R2 320 back in April 2026. 

We’ve heard unconfirmed reports that Foster Care is scheduled for a R10 bump from R1 290 to R1 300. However, this is yet to be made official by the agency. And if it does, it will inevitably draw criticism from other beneficiaries about why only one grant is increasing.

INCOME ELIGIBILITY FOR SASSA CHILDCARE GRANTS

As ever, applicants must keep up to date with any and all income eligibility requirements. Previously, a single caregiver on Child Support could earn R5 100 per month and still qualify. Now that limit has increased to R5 800. And for married couples looking after a minor, the figure increases from R10 200 to R11 600 per month. This is good news for those earning a bit extra on the side.

Tallied up annually, that equates to R69 600 (single person) and R139 200 (couple). Note that there is no asset portion to the Child Support means test, like there is with SASSA Older Person Grants. Better still, the agency says most SASSA Childcare Grants in October 2026 can be approved on the same day. Previously, the waiting period used to be three months. A such, here’s what you must remember to bring to your application appointment:

• Valid identity documents (IDs) – preferably Smart ID cards plus biometrics – and birth certificates of you, your child and spouse (if married).
• Proof of marital status (marriage, birth or death certificate of your spouse).
• Proof of income (you and your spouse).
• Certified three-month bank statement, not older than three months.
• Proof of address (a utility statement with your name on it that’s not more the three-months old).

If you don’t produce all the correct documents and copies, you may be sent away and asked to return. And if you are denied a SASSA grant, you have three months to lodge an appeal with the DSD HERE.
