Tilda Swinton to Star Off-Broadway In Solo Show ‘Man to Man’
Tilda Swinton will make her New York stage debut this winter in Manfred Karge’s Man to Man.
The solo show will play the Lucille Lortel Theatre starting Feb. 21, 2027, with an opening night Feb. 28 for a strictly limited eight-week run. Swinton returns to the role after originating the role in 1987.
The Academy Award winner is currently performing in the role at London’s Royal Court Theatre, marking her first return to the stage for the first time since the original production. This production will also have limited runs in Scotland at the Traverse Theatre and in Germany with the Berliner Ensemble before coming to New York.
Set in 1930s Germany, the play follows a woman who assumes her dead husband’s identity and lives as Ella/Max as the country changes, including through war and dictatorship. The production originated at the Traverse Theatre, which first commissioned the original production in 1987 before it transferred in 1988 to the Royal Court.
This revival brings back the original creative team with direction by Stephen Unwin, design by Bunny Christie and translation by Anthoyn Vivis, with revisions by Unwin. Lighting Design is by Ben Ormerod, sound design by Elena Peña and projection design by Matt Powell.
Swinton won the Academy Award in 2007 for her role in Michael Clayton. Other film credits include The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Burn After Reading, Orlando and her frequent collaborations with director Wes Anderson, which include roles in Moonrise Kingdom, The Grand Budapest Hotel, The French Dispatch and Asteroid City.
Brian and Dayna Lee, The Royal Court Theatre, Berliner Ensemble, and Madison Wells Live are producing.
