Steven Sordenbergh joins ‘The Batman Part II’ after Matt Reeves takes a step back from filming

Variety reported that Steven Soderbergh is joining ‘The Batman Part II’ after Matt Reeves departs to complete the project. The report also revealed that while Reeves will not be working on set anymore, he is still connected to the project. Sordenbergh will take over the operations for the principal photography and will be working with Reeves from a distance in the final months of the Robert Pattinson-led film’s production.

More about Steven Sordenbergh

Sordenbergh has been in the industry since 1981; however, his love for filmmaking had been there since his teenage years when he first started making short films with the use of Super 8 and 16mm cameras in Louisiana. After graduating high school, he moved to Hollywood and started working odd jobs to make ends meet. This included his stint as a game show scorekeeper, cue card holder, and freelance film editor, to name a few.

His breakthrough came around 1985, when he worked on the feature-length concert film ‘Yes: 9012 Live’ for the rock band Yes. This concert documentary ended up earning him a Grammy Award nomination. He made his feature film debut with the critically acclaimed film 'Sex, Lies, and Videotape,' which won him the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. He is best known for his direction on projects like ‘Ocean’s 11,' ‘Out of Sight,' 'Traffic,' ‘Magic Mike,' 'Contagion,' 'Presence,' and ‘Black Bag.'

What happened to Matt Reeves?

Reeves, who directed the first ‘Batman’ reboot film with Pattinson in 2017, had been confirmed to helm the upcoming sequel months ago. However, earlier this month, the production studios behind the ‘The Batman’ movies announced that due to “personal reasons," Reeves is stepping away from the project.Their official statement about the matter read, "Production on The Batman Part II has been temporarily paused while Matt Reeves focuses on a family matter.

Matt has the full support of DC Studios, and we look forward to continuing the journey soon.” At the time, fans had been left unsure about the film’s future and who will continue the superhero vigilante’s legacy.Reeves had also issued his own statement on X (formerly known as Twitter) about how he is not leaving the project completely. His post read, “Just to be clear, I am not leaving The Batman Part II. I am profoundly grateful to Steven for coming to my aid during this challenging time to help me finish principal photography. Thank you to all for your concern and well wishes.”The DC Universe movie has already faced multiple delays, as earlier this year the release date was shifted from October 2026 to October 2027. However, the slated release date for the movie has been now scheduled for February 18, 2028.
