Reviewing the MOFT Dynamic Folio – a year later

Is this the best iPad case out there?

AT A GLANCE

  • The author has been using the MOFT Dynamic Folio case for their iPad since 2019 and considers it the best iPad case they've owned due to its unique design and durability.
  • The Dynamic Folio offers over 20 different folding modes for various uses, such as streaming and drawing, while maintaining a lightweight and thin profile.
  • Despite some drawbacks, including limited protection and complexity in remembering all folding modes, the author feels the case is worth the price and plans to continue using it long-term.

I’ve been an iPad user since 2013, and with each upgrade, I’ve always faced the same problem — I could never find a case that I was truly happy with. My biggest pet peeve was how easily smart covers would stretch out when you fold up the case as a stand. Then I stumbled upon an iPad case called the Dynamic Folio that was designed by MOFT, and I’ve stuck with it since.

I’ve been a MOFT user since 2019, all the way back when it was just a Kickstarter project selling folding risers for MacBooks. It was my first time buying a crowdfunded product, and I’m so happy to see that seven years later, they’re still making amazing things.

MOFT specializes in creating mobile office accessories. They primarily make device stands that magnetically snap into place or fold into themselves when stored. Apart from the laptop riser, I’ve also bought an invisible tripod for my iPhone.

The Dynamic Folio for my 11-inch iPad is the latest purchase I’ve made from them in over a year and is so far the best iPad case I’ve had.

What makes the MOFT Dynamic Folio unique
Computer, Electronics, Laptop

Origami-style cases aren’t new in the iPad accessory market, but MOFT took the idea a step further by offering more than 20 ways to fold the case. There are orientations built for placing the iPad on top of a table for when you’re streaming or even using the Apple Pencil to draw. And there are folds where you can slot your leg into the case or folds that make use of your iPhone, too.

The material is so thin and lightweight that it barely adds any bulk to your iPad.

My most used mode is called theater mode, where the iPad floats closer to eye level. Then, if I tilt the iPad down, I easily switch to creation mode. For reading, I usually switch over to Portrait Mode.

All these different modes are what made me buy the case, but what kept me from switching out is how well the case was designed and built.

Still looks fresh out of the box

I do want to preface this by writing that I’m very careful with my things, but I’m writing about the MOFT Dynamic Folio because it dawned on me that it’s been more than a year since I bought it, and I hadn’t had the urge to replace it yet.

See, with most iPad cases, the hinge of the case itself is usually just some fabric material that, over time, would stretch out. The iPad would then stand at a weird angle when you prop it up, or it is harder to lock the iPad with just the smart cover.

The Dynamic Folio also uses fabric as its hinge, but there are no signs of it stretching out.

In fact, all the creases and folds on the case itself still look clean! No scuffs or marks from repeated folding. I use my iPad a lot. I put a lot of weight on my iPad when I draw on it. There’s not a day that goes by without me propping it up in theater mode and streaming Netflix or Spotify.

The edges haven’t frayed and look intact. And apart from a few stains from when I use my iPad while painting, it still looks new.

Not rugged enough

The Dynamic Folio, of course, has its own set of disadvantages. Since the case is built for portability and productivity, the tradeoff is that it’s not the most robust case – i.e., you can’t drop your iPad and expect it will be unscuffed with this case on. It also doesn’t protect the sides in any way.

And while the Dynamic Folio can fold in over twenty ways, I’ve only actually ever used less than five of the modes available because they’re not exactly easy to remember, even with the small icons printed on the case to help you figure out what can snap where.

Despite the drawbacks and the P2,000 price tag (depending on which iPad model you have), I do feel like I’ve gotten my money’s worth because this is a case I definitely see myself sticking with for the long term. – Rappler.com
