KUCHING, Nov 1 — The Sarawak government is exploring potential collaboration with Russia in rocket and satellite launches, leveraging the state’s strategic location near the Equator.

Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg said the proposal was raised by the Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Malaysia, Naiyl M. Latypov, during a courtesy call last week.

“I mentioned that we (Sarawak) require more engineers and are prepared to explore collaboration to develop a larger pool of professionals in the field,” he said at the inauguration of the extension building of Gurdwara Sahib Kuching here today.

Abang Johari said Sarawak must capitalise on growing international interest in the state by implementing effective policies and ensuring clear development plans.

Recently, local media reported that Russia had expressed its readiness to discuss potential collaboration with Sarawak in various sectors, including aerospace, energy, agriculture, shipbuilding and education. — Bernama
