Shakiru Giwa has left his position as head coach of Inter Lagos following the club’s difficult start to life in the Nigeria Premier Football League, with the newly promoted side still searching for their first victory after eight matches, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The club announced his departure on Tuesday in a statement published on its official X account, thanking the coach for his contribution, particularly his role in securing promotion from the Nigeria National League to the NPFL.

“Coach Giwa has been an important part of the club’s journey, most notably leading Inter Lagos FC to promotion from the Nigeria National League (NNL) to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL),” the club said.

“This achievement represents a significant milestone in the club’s history and an important part of its growth.

“The club expresses its sincere appreciation for his dedication, commitment and contribution to this historic achievement. His role in guiding Inter Lagos FC to the NPFL will remain a valued part of the club’s story.”

The club also wished Giwa well in his future coaching career, adding, “As both parties move forward, Inter Lagos FC wishes Coach Giwa every success in his future coaching endeavours.”

Giwa’s departure comes as Inter Lagos struggle to establish themselves in the top flight following their promotion. The club sit bottom of the league table with two points from eight matches, having failed to record a victory in their opening fixtures.

The coach had guided Inter Lagos to the NPFL for the first time in the club’s history, marking a significant achievement before their difficult start to the new campaign.

Inter Lagos concluded their statement by thanking Giwa for his service and contribution to the club’s journey.
