Venom’s New Ultimate Form Comes With A Major Catch

The Venom symbiote has bonded with many hosts over the years. The most well-known of the bunch are Spider-Man, who brought the symbiote back to Earth after initially thinking it was just an alien black costume, and Eddie Brock, the Spidey villain-turned-antihero who was the first character to go by Venom. Later hosts have included Mac Gargan, better known as the villainous Scorpion; Flash Thompson, who fought crime as Agent Venom; and Mary Jane Watson, who followed the same superhero path as the All-New Venom.

Yet, all this pales in comparison to what the Venom symbiote pulled off earlier this month in Queen in Black #4. The crossover’s penultimate issue saw the sentient black goo enveloping Earth and its population to become Venomworld. While this marks the character’s most powerful form yet in its 40+ years of existence, there’s already a key vulnerability for Venomworld that’s been exposed.

Venomworld Seemingly Comes With A Time Limit

The preview for Venom #262 sees Spider-Man, now wearing his black costume again, interacting with Reed Richards, a.k.a. Mister Fantastic, and Dylan Brock, who’s now bonded with the Toxin symbiote, within the Venom mindscape following the birth of Venomworld. Reed notes that because Venom is capable of bonding with more than one person at a time, it can be extrapolated that “extra hosts mean extra brain chemicals for the symbiote to feed on.” From there, the Fantastic Four’s leader theorizes that “the more hosts Venom has, the more he can have.”

However, Dylan questions that theory, recalling how the last time Venom tried bonding with two people at once, it was “a strain.” Because the symbiote controlling eight billion humans and all other living beings on our planet, Dylan, who’s a human/symbiote hybrid and has also been one of Venom’s hosts, questions how long Venomworld can remain intact. Peter also questions where Mary Jane is, unaware that she’s helping control Earth with Venom and keeping all of its inhabitants calm and cooperative.

Venomworld Doesn’t Have Long To Save The Day

If Dylan’s theory is correct, then Venomworld doesn’t have long to emerge victorious in Queen in Black. The story has followed Hela, the Asgardian goddess of death who is now the crossover’s namesake monarch, clashing with Knull, the new "King in All" who built a new symbiote army and is also now empowered by the Lightforce Dimension. Although the antagonistic symbiotes have been frozen in place, Hela and Knull aren't finished causing trouble.

Even with a symbiote-controlled planet now in the mix, that doesn’t guarantee automatic victory. If Venomworld’s battle with Knull and Hela lasts for too long, then eventually Venom won’t be able to stay bonded to Earth for a significant amount of time. A forced severing could kill everyone in our world, and even on the off chance it doesn’t, there’s still the matter of how Earth would be stuck at a different location in the galaxy. Venomworld, along with the Marvel heroes who weren’t on before the bonding, need to work quickly to end this threat once and for all.

Whatever happens at the end of Queen in Black, Dylan is correct that Venomworld isn’t sticking around for long. Following the event, Eddie will bond with the Venom symbiote again, kicking off a new Venom title that debuts on October 14. Furthermore, although Mary Jane’s time as Venom is wrapping up, it’s been revealed that in her upcoming five-issue limited series Friendly Neighborhood Mary Jane, which starts on November 4, she’ll retain a piece of the symbiote as she becomes a film producer.

Both Venom #262 and Queen in Black #5 will be released on Wednesday, September 30 by Marvel Comics.
