As far as PC goes as a platform, it really is impressive just how much Steam has managed to do since first debuting as a storefront to fans all those years ago. It is now the central hub of PC gaming, and for good reason, with the range of titles and tools on offer to players far better than you'll find anywhere else.
Whether you're into fast-paced multiplayer titles, strategy games, or sprawling RPGs, there are thousands of examples on the storefront at this point, with a little something out there for everyone. The only unfortunate caveat, as with all digital stores, is that games can be removed at any time, and for a variety of reasons, leaving those who might otherwise have bought a title out in the cold.
Now, that's about to happen again, though given the reviews the game has received so far, it might not be as big of a miss as it could have been otherwise.
Over on Steam, you should be able to find the store page for Darkest Days, a post-apocalyptic zombie shooter that tasks players with exploring and surviving in an open-world, alongside other real world citizens who managed to escape the zombie hordes initially. It's a standard enough premise, but what gamers have seen so far was only enough to draw overall Mixed reviews on the platform.
Unfortunately for those who are playing, the developer recently shared a statement confirming that they are closing the game down for good:
"Hello Survivors, This is the DARKEST DAYS. First and foremost, we would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to all the Survivors who have been part of the DARKEST DAYS journey. It is with a heavy heart that we announce the upcoming termination of the DARKEST DAYS services.
"Although we have made every effort to continue on this road with our Survivors for as long as possible, we sincerely apologize that we are unable to continue providing the service. The time you have spent with us and the valuable feedback you have shared throughout this journey have meant a great deal to us. The DARKEST DAYS Team will always cherish the love and support you have shown us.
"During the remaining service period, we will do our utmost to provide the necessary information and support to minimize any inconvenience to our Survivors. Please refer to the information below for important dates and procedures regarding the service termination."
It's always sad to see a game that appears well-intentioned fall by the wayside, though part of the problem usually comes from just how much competition there is. This is particularly true in the zombie genre, and Darkest Days seemingly didn't have enough to stand out from the pack.
The game is set to remain live for the next month or so. After that, it will be pulled from stores and the game will become unplayable from November 24, though it's worth noting that seasonal content and ongoing events will remain accessible as normal in Darkest Days until the service termination date.
