Rotary renovates Lagos classroom, donates 2,300 books
The Rotary Club of Lekki Golden, Rotary International District 9112, has renovated and furnished a Junior Secondary School classroom at Badore Community Primary School in the Eti-Osa Local Government Area of Lagos State.
This is in addition to its donation of 2,300 exercise books to pupils and students of Ilasan Secondary School, Ikate, Lekki.
The projects were part of the club’s activities marking Rotary’s Basic Education and Literacy Month.
The classroom renovation was funded with a N2m grant from Rotary District 9112 and a N567,500 contribution from Akinlabi Akintayo, the club’s immediate past service projects chair, who also executed the construction work.
The renovation included the installation of an approximately 84-square-metre grooved PVC ceiling, repair and repainting of seven metal doors and windows, rehabilitation of cracked walls and repainting of the classroom.
The club also provided new desks and benches for pupils, as well as tables and chairs for the teachers’ office.
Onward Paper Mill Ltd sponsored the learning materials, while the Rotary Club provided 1,000 biros and 120 Oxford mathematical sets.
The club president, Abiodun Olawale-Cole, at the handover of the projects, said the intervention was to provide lasting benefits to pupils who would use the classroom in subsequent years.

“Every child deserves a safe, bright classroom and something to write in. This classroom will serve every new JSS 1 class at Badore for years to come,” he said.
Olawale-Cole added that the project reflected Rotary’s theme for the year, “Create Lasting Impact,” and thanked the district, sponsors, club members and other supporters for their contributions.
The club’s administrator, Chidera Okafor, is also sponsoring a full year of school uniforms for a new Badore pupil whose family could not afford one.
The Rotary Club also donated books to students of Ilasan Secondary School, which hosts its Interact Club, Rotary’s service club for young people aged 12 to 18.
The club said it would monitor attendance and ensure efficient use of the facilities.
Representatives of IGI Insurance and GTI Group also conducted financial literacy sessions for the pupils, covering saving, investing and insurance.
The programme featured sessions on character and hygiene, while a reading plan was introduced for the pupils, with follow-up activities scheduled.
