Jamie Carragher apologises over controversial Aston Villa statement
Former Liverpool player Jamie Carragher has released an official apology for his controversial statement on Aston Villa.
Former Liverpool defender and football pundit Jamie Carragher has apologised to Aston Villa, the club's owners and supporters after the Premier League side threatened legal action over comments he made about the club and its fans.
The controversy began during an episode of the Stick to Football podcast, where Carragher discussed speculation linking Aston Villa manager Unai Emery with a possible move to Manchester United should the opportunity arise.
While arguing that Manchester United remain a bigger club than Aston Villa, Carragher suggested there was a hierarchy in football and that clubs like United could attract managers and players from teams below them.
He then directed an expletive at Villa supporters who had criticised his suggestion, saying: "Shut the f*** up Villa fans. Aston Villa will never be Manchester United."
His comments sparked backlash among Aston Villa supporters, prompting the club's chairman, Nassef Sawiris, to issue a strongly worded statement on Friday, October 30, announcing plans to take legal action against the pundit.
The statement read:
"Aston Villa will initiate legal action against Jamie Carragher for his unacceptable insults about the club and its fans. Aston Villa will not allow anyone to stop our ascension in English and European football. Nassef Sawiris, Chairman."
Before issuing his apology, Carragher attempted to clarify his remarks, insisting they were made jokingly following criticism from Villa supporters over his comments about Emery and Manchester United.
He also maintained that he had great admiration for Emery, describing the Spaniard as one of the best managers in the Premier League.
However, following the club's threat of legal action, the former England international issued a public apology on Saturday, admitting that his choice of words was inappropriate.
He wrote:
"I’d like to apologise to Aston Villa, the owners & their fans. My language this week was clumsy & wrong. I can assure Villa fans it was tongue in cheek but I can understand it’s not come across that way, so apologies. Good luck today UTV!"
Carragher's apology comes after the controversy escalated into a potential legal dispute, although Aston Villa did not publicly specify the legal grounds for its proposed action.
