Minister urges app firms to monitor online driver vehicle safety

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's Transportation Minister Dudy Purwagandhi asked application companies to oversee compliance with vehicle safety standards for online motorcycle taxi drivers (ojol) in strengthening protection in the digital platform-based transportation ecosystem.
"If it has become public transportation, it means there must be safety standards, such as helmets, vehicle maintenance; and application companies must also oversee this maintenance," Purwagandhi confirmed here on Saturday.
He stressed that fulfilling the rights and obligations of all parties in the digital platform-based transportation ecosystem must go hand in hand with safety as the top priority.
He said this follows up on the issuance of Presidential Regulation Number 27 of 2026 on the Protection of the Digital Platform-Based Transportation Ecosystem.

According to him, the regulation serves as the foundation to strengthen the partnership between drivers and application companies, including in fulfilling rights, carrying out obligations, and ensuring certainty of protection mechanisms for all parties.
Purwagandhi explained the safety aspect is a minimum standard that must be met in providing transportation.
In this regard, he added, drivers need to ensure their vehicles are in roadworthy condition, carry out regular maintenance, and use safety equipment as required.
Meanwhile, application companies are responsible for supporting these safety standards, among others by monitoring vehicle conditions and sending maintenance reminders based on how intensively vehicles are used.

In line with the instruction, Minister Purwagandhi continues to exercise its authority to regulate fares for digital platform-based passenger transportation, including through service cost guidelines that serve as a reference for service delivery.
Application companies must apply principles of fairness, transparency, and compliance in setting transportation service fees and application service fees.
"Likewise, we as the responsible authority should regulate fares, so fares will be one of the references, among others for the Communication and Digital Affairs Ministry in regulating the transportation of goods and food," he stated.
